Sadio Mane - A star from Metz to Liverpool

Since he’s arrived at Anfield in July 2016, Sadio Mane did a tremendous job on the attack system for the Reds. Jurgen Klopp made an amazing selection one year after he came to Anfield by choosing Mane as a corner-stone for the attack of Liverpool. And in just few years, he became one of the best Europe’s forwards.

The Senegal international scored 26 goals for Liverpool on his third season with the Reds (2018/2019) which helped the team to achieve the first Champions League since 2005.

Mane before Liverpool

Sadio has played with 3 different clubs before Liverpool (Metz, Red Bull Salzburg and Southampton).

Metz

The Senegal international started his professional career with FC Metz in January 2012. He spent a season with the French club based in Metz, he played 22 games and scored 2 goals before he moved to the Austrian Bundesliga.

Red Bull Salzburg

After Metz, and in August 2012, Sadio Mane signed with Red Bull Salzburg in the Austrian Bundesliga.

He’s spent two seasons with Austrian club based in Wals-Siezenheim where he scored his first hat-trick in October. Then after two seasons, Mane decided to go to the Premier League after playing 63 games and scoring 31 goals.

Southampton

In September 2014 and for £11.8 million, Mane signed a 4-years long contract with Southampton. He has scored his first goal with in the Premier League against Sunderland (the game ended 8/0 for Southampton).

On 16 May 2015, Mane set a record for the fasted Hat-trick in the Premier League by scoring it in only 2 minutes 56 seconds in the game against Aston Villa. He spent two seasons with Southampton in which he scored 21 goals in 67 matches before he transferred to Liverpool.

Mane with the Reds

In June 2016 and for £34 million, Sadio Mane signed a five-year contract with Liverpool. He has scored his first goal with Liverpool in the Premier League against Arsenal (the game ended 4/3 for Southampton). Despite having a shoulder injury in the beginning of the season, Sadio was named the Liverpool Player of the Season award in May 2017.

On his second season with Liverpool, he scored the first goal for the team against Watford and the match ended (3/3). In August 2017, Mane was named the League player of the month after scoring a goal in each match of the month. And in this season, he formed with Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino a wonderful attacking combination and the fans started to call them “Fab Three”.

Sadio Mane has described his happiness in Liverpool:

“I’m very happy here and I think people are happy with me too. We want to write our names alongside the many great ones in the story of this club. Hopefully it’s the beginning of something special.”

Later, he became the first Senegalese player to score in the final of the UEFA Champions League after scoring for the Reds against Real Madrid on 26 May 2018. And on those two seasons (2016/17 and 2017/18), he scored for Liverpool a total of 33 goals in all the competitions.

Mane winning the champions League

After losing the final against Real Madrid, Liverpool came back to the final at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid against Tottenham Hotspur. Early on that match, Mane made a penalty for Liverpool which is scored by Mo Salah as the first goal. The Reds won 2 – 0 goals scored by: Mo Salah and Origi, giving Mane his first trophy with Liverpool in 2019.

Also in 2019, Mane was named the man of the UEFA Super Cup final against Chelsea (the match ended 5/4 for Liverpool on penalties). In addition to that, he won the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup by assisting the goal for Firmino on the final against Flamengo.

Mane winning the Premier League 2019/20

After losing the Premier League 2018/19 to Manchester City by only one point, Liverpool came back to win the Premier League 2020/21. The season was absolutely historic for the Reds after a 30-year wait to achieve the League title. By this winning, Liverpool got the 19th top-flight title which’s their first since 1989/90.

Sadio Mane achieved 35 Premier League appearances on this season scoring 18 goals and made 7 assists. Mane has played a total of 2,753 minutes. He also named AFCON African Player of the Year after an absolutely brilliant season with the Reds and his national team Senegal.

The former defender of Liverpool Jamie Carragher is a big of Sadio Mane. He said on him:

“I absolutely love him, he’s my favorite player at the club. He’s brilliant, he’s always got a smile on his face, always there, always gets knocked about, gets goals, setting others up”.

“Mane is the one who came in at the very start under Klopp, his first real big signing, and I think ever since then he’s just been getting better and better. He’s just a machine”.

Lionel Messi

The star of Barcelona Lionel Messi said on Mane after Sadio was named the fourth in Ballon d’Or in 2019:

“It’s a shame to see Mane finish in fourth place”.

“But I think there have been a lot of great players this year. That’s why it was difficult to choose a particular player. But I chose Sadio Mane because he’s a player that I like”.

“Mane achieved a great year that was exceptional for the entire Liverpool team. That’s why I chose him. I repeat, there were a lot of very great players this year, so the choice was difficult”.
